Bake and cool cookies before decorating. Make sure cookies are fully cooled. If they are warm, the icing will run off of them. Make royal icing. Learn how to mix different consistencies of royal icing here>>
Prepare the following icing colors:
Piping Consistency:
White
Pink
Yellow
Purple
Teal
Black (alternatively you can use a candy--see step 8)
Flood Consistency:
Bright White -
2Outline the entire cookie in white piping consistency royal icing. Pipe a squiggle of white piping consistency icing in the body of the unicorn, this will prevent the flood consistency icing from collapsing or cratering. Move immediately to the next step.
-
3Flood the entire cookie using white flood consistency royal icing. Let the flood icing dry for 30 - 60 minutes, or until crusted over. If you don't allow sufficient time for it to dry, your details will bleed into the white flooded shape.
-
4Using yellow piping consistency royal icing, pipe the unicorn horn. Snip a tipless bag so that it has a fine point. Using this fine point, pipe a tight spiral to create texture in the unicorn horn.
-
5Using the blue piping consistency royal icing, pipe the unicorn mane as shown in the photo. Use the tip of your bag to create a swooping look to the mane-it will create a mane that looks like it is flowing. Dispense royal icing with the tip of your piping bag pressed firmly on the cookie, then remove in a sweeping motion to get some movement in the mane. Pro tip: It can be helpful to cut a larger hole than you would typically use for piping consistency so that you don't have to add more pressure to the bag and get a smoother effect to the icing. Let the icing dry for 30-60 minutes.
-
6Using the purple piping consistency royal icing, pipe the unicorn mane using the same technique as step 5 next to the blue icing you just piped. Let the icing dry for 30-60 minutes.
-
7Using the pink piping consistency royal icing, pipe the unicorn mane next to the purple icing you just piped. Let the icing dry for 30-60 minutes. At this point, you can stop if you feel like you have enough of a mane, or you can continue and do another layer of hair.

Using the black outline consistency royal icing, pipe a small dot for the unicorn eye. Alternatively, you can use a small candy for the eye. Using the pink piping consistency royal icing, pipe the nose and use your scribe tool or toothpick, to smooth out the icing.
