Bake and cool cookies before decorating. Make sure cookies are fully cooled. If they are warm, the icing will run off of them. Make royal icing.
-
2
Prepare the following icing colors:
Detail Consistency:
Black
Green
Flood Consistency:
Black -

If you have an edible pen, you may find it useful to outline where the legs and tail are on the cat. If not, you can begin by outlining the entire cat shape with detail consistency icing. You will also outline the front and rear legs, the tail, and the head. The outline of these areas will create definition between these different parts of the cat. Since the entire cat is black, this step is necessary.
Note: You will flood in stages. By not flooding the entire cookie at the same time, you'll be able to maintain definition between the different parts of the cat. -
4
Fill the cat head in with black flood consistency icing, gently moving the icing around with a scribe or toothpick to ensure full coverage and to pop any air bubbles.
-
5
Next, fill the cat tail in with black flood consistency icing, gently moving the icing around with a scribe or toothpick to ensure full coverage and to pop any air bubbles.
-
6
Once the cat head and tail have just crusted over (this takes about 10-15 minutes), flood the rest of the cat's body, except for the rear leg. Be careful not to smudge your detail icing around the cat legs. Gently move your icing around with a toothpick or scribe to ensure full coverage and to pop any air bubbles.
Wait for this icing to just crust over, about 10-15 minutes. -
7
Lastly, flood the rear leg/hip area with black flood consistency icing.
-
8
Time for the details! Start by piping green dots for the eyes with green detail consistency icing. Pipe small black dots with black detail consistency icing in the center of the green dots, then use your scribe tool or toothpick to elongate the pupils.
-
9
Using your black detail consistency icing, continue to add details. A mouth, nose, whiskers, and some hair around the ears and tail of the cat will make it look more lifelike.
