Don’t put this cookie cutter away when the holidays are over! Our classic Gingerbread Man shape gets a makeover as an astronaut in this step-by-step tutorial.

Ingredients
-
Gingerbread Man Cookie Cutter
-
Piping Bags
-
Bright White Food Coloring
-
Super Black Food Coloring
-
Sky Blue Food Coloring
-
Thingamagenie (or a sharp toothpick)
Directions
Bake and cool cookies fully before decorating. Prepare royal icing in the following colors and consistencies:
Outline/Piping Consistency:
White
Blue
Flood Consistency:
White
Gray (add a small amount of Super Black food coloring to white icing)
Outline the shape of the cookie, as shown in the photo, with the white outline consistency icing.
First, outline the helmet, then the body of the gingerbread man shape.
Add a squiggle of white outline consistency icing in the section surrounding the helmet, as shown in the photo. This helps to prevent craters or sinking in the icing as it dries.
Pro Tip: Small sections are prone to flood icing cratering. It is best practice to add a squiggle of outline consistency icing and use the outline consistency icing to fill in and manipulate with your scribe tool to maintain the height of the icing as it dries.
Flood the surface of the cookie with the white flood consistency royal icing, leaving the helmet section empty.
Use your scribe tool or toothpick to smooth out the icing and pop any air bubbles that come up. Allow this icing to dry for 20-30 minutes before moving onto the next step.
Fill in the helmet section with the light gray flood consistency icing.
Allow this section to dry for 15-20 minutes before moving onto the next step.
Using the white outline consistency royal icing, add the line detailing onto the astronaut suit, as shown in the photo.
We added some simple detailing to the cuffs and the center of the space suit, but feel free to get creative!
Add a final small dot of light blue outline consistency royal icing to the right side of the astronaut suit.
